“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 |
Our StoryAfter years of running resulted in an injury and a few months of carrying two heavy babies landed me with tennis elbow, I realized all my strength was in my legs, and I had little upper body strength. In search of a gentler, more balanced routine, I picked up a set of yoga videos at Sam’s and began practicing in my bedroom. I fell in love with the practice but realized there was a limit to what I could learn without hands-on instruction. With no options in Yazoo City, the only way to deepen my practice and learn proper technique and alignment was to go to school and become trained. In 2004, I received my 200-hour certification through the Yoga Alliance accredited Center for Yoga and Health in Clinton.
I quickly discovered that many people, particularly here in the Bible belt, are skeptical of yoga because of its Hindu roots. Yoga is often misconceived as being a religion, and some feel yoga conflicts with Christianity. But yoga is a practice for everyone. I saw a unique fit for quality yoga instruction in a Christian environment, hence, the birth of Yoga Yazoo. In 2005, I renovated a fabulous old building in the Yazoo City Historic District and created a tranquil space painted in soothing shades of linen and sea glass. Three huge windows allow the bright sun to radiate the room and occasionally welcome a wonderful breeze. It's a lovely, serene place to practice. - Nettie Byrd, Owner |
